Is Your Pearl Genuine?

July 26, 2022 Off By admin

Indians are known to love and value precious gems. These include pearls. Thousands of Indian women are known to have different pearl pieces of jewellery such as bracelets, earrings, and necklaces. In fact, according to a study, in the fiscal year 2021, India exported pearl, precious, and semi-precious jewellery worth close to 18 billion dollars. Now that’s a lot of precious accessories.

However, there are also sellers who pretend that their products are genuine even though some of them are fake. It would really be disappointing if the pure pearl necklace you were extremely taking care of wasn’t really genuine. With this, here are things to consider to determine if your jewellery is genuine or not.

Irregularities are Normal

Even when farmed pearls are of the highest caliber and are perfectly matched, there will always be minute differences between them. The pearls are probably fake if every aspect of their shape, size, color, and surface features is flawless and identical.

Surface Feel

Because of their layered nacre composition, pearls, both natural and cultured, have rough surfaces. As a result, the pearls feel slightly gritty when lightly rubbed against one another. However, fake or counterfeit pearls typically have a smooth texture.

Find the Holes

Real pearls typically have very tiny drill holes, whereas fake pearls frequently have larger ones. The coating around the drill holes of imitation seems to be like shiny paint when viewed up close and it’s common to observe flakes or chipped coating that will eventually peel off.

Check the Color

Overtones are translucent colors that occur on a pearl’s outer surface. They are a common feature of both natural and cultured pearls. It stands out, particularly in good-quality pearls. If the pearls lack depth and have only one consistent color, they are probably fake.
